Our students across the district had a blast this Halloween! From hayrides for our elementary students to candy and cider at the high school, our students had a spooktacular time. The day culminated in the annual Halloween Parade, as our elementary students marched to each building in their Halloween costumes. Check out some of our favorite highlights from the day!
On Thursday, Trevor Sweeting, Bryant Denza, Virginia Culver, Clare McNamara, Claire Reed, Jenna Kocienda, Arianna Arkema, Evan Kocienda, Natalee Griffiths, and Chloe Risley attended the annual Herkimer County Youth Summit Conference hosted by Catholic Charities.
The conference featured a keynote speaker, Juan Cangas, who spoke about resiliency and leadership through tough times. The conference also included interactive break-out sessions with topics such as mental health & coping skills, drug use/signs of overdose, and human trafficking.
Our students met and brainstormed at the end of the program to discuss ideas and activities for this school year.
Happy Halloween!
On Friday, our high school Living Environment and Environmental Science classes visited SUNY Morrisville as an extension of their units on Ecology. Students toured and learned about Horticulture, Equine Rehabilitation, Aquaculture, and Clean Energy Technology at SUNY Morrisville. Also, students enjoyed lunch in the dining hall and saw a few MMCSD alumni! Thank you to Dr. Jenny Frank from SUNY Morrisville for putting together the tour of these programs and facilities and to Mrs. Martin, Ms. Robinson, Mrs. Jeter, and Mrs. Boston for chaperoning the trip!
On Monday, October 16, the senior class went to the Black River Wild Forest, where they had the option to hike or bike. Although it was a wet and chilly day, our students made the best of it!
Senior students Virginia Culver, Marissa Kulczak, and Morgan O'Bryan attended an "Honors Mindfulness Program" hosted by Herkimer BOCES. Our students learned various mindfulness and relaxation techniques to mitigate and cope with stress and anxiety. Some of the methods from the program will be taught to other students throughout the year via Sources of Strength and Youth Summit events, programming, and activities.
Last Thursday, the senior class participated in Drone Day. Thanks to CNY Drones, students watched a 10-foot drone take off, fly around, and land. Additionally, students were able to fly Rocket Drones through an obstacle course and fly Soccer Drones in the cage. Thank you to the MORIC, CNY Drones, and Rocket Drones for giving our students this opportunity!

The high school drama club is hard at work on their production of Chasing the Carpe Diem!
Rehearsals began with the table read with a special guest, playwright Brenda Fager. This amazing opportunity gives the student cast the chance to learn from Ms. Fager's energy and the inspiration for her script and her characters.
The curtain will open at 7 p.m. on November 17th and 18th. Friday night's performance will include an opportunity to ask questions of the cast and playwright immediately following the show.
Chasing the Carpe Diem was written specifically for the high school stage. Under the direction of Suzanne Culver and Carrie Nelson, this will be the first-ever staged production of the show.
Mount Markham High School SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) hosted speaker Kevin Brooks on Friday, September 22. Brooks is an inspirational speaker, author, actor, and comedian from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Brooks told his story about being a teenager driving intoxicated, distracted, and at excessive speeds that ultimately led to a car crash. Weeks later, Brooks would learn he was paralyzed from the chest down and his close friend was killed.
Brooks has written a best-selling book - "Wiggle Your Toes" - and for nearly 20 years, Kevin's message has inspired millions of people around the world.
Congratulations on receiving a Staff Shout-Out, Jim Wrobel and Beth Wilson! Thank you for everything you do to keep our school running efficiently.
The Senior Class is sponsoring the semi-formal Homecoming Ball in the Mount Markham High School Courtyard (weather permitting) on Saturday, October 7! Tickets are on sale for all high school students now through September 29 and can be purchased from Mrs. Brower or Ms. Robinson!
