Two of our varsity track and field athletes, Sara Edmonson and Allison Denton, have wonderfully exhibited the importance of teamwork this season as they worked together on hurdling. As a senior, Sara has helped Allison make significant progress in the hurdles, and the two push each other in practice and meets. Both have qualified for sectionals in the 100m hurdles and the 400m hurdles. Excellent work, Sara and Allison!
Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! We are proud to have so many dedicated, hardworking teachers throughout the district.

On Friday, April 26, Arbor Day was celebrated at the high school by planting two sugar maples! The planting of the trees was made possible through a grant from the Urban Forestry Tree Council. Students in various agriculture classes had the opportunity throughout the week to prepare the site for planting with equipment donated by Clinton Tractor. Terry Hawkridge of Rustic Pines and the Urban Forestry Tree Council delivered the trees on Wednesday. Mr. Hawkridge and Jessica Pyrda of Oneida County Soil and Water assisted students with the planting of the trees. On Friday, under the guidance of Terry Hawkridge, Jessica Pyrda and Dan Welc of NYS DEC, students from the elementary school and the West Winfield Garden Club helped to mulch the trees.

On Monday, April 22, Mrs. Raymond, Mrs. Martin and 18 students from Intro to Agriculture, Forestry, & Natural Resources and Environmental Science classes and the Envirothon team participated in Earth Day! Students worked with Oneida County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Town of Bridgewater to do a Stream Clean-Up in Bridgwater. Students walked a stream from behind the Bridgewater Fire House, all the way down the stream to behind Patty's Pub. While walking, students picked up any trash and debris in the stream that was causing flooding. Materials removed included tires, plastic, cans and metal scraps all within the stream and along the bank. Students then learned all about what the plan is to be able to relocate the stream to help prevent additional flooding to landowners. The goal for this project is to hopefully start this coming summer. Students also had the opportunity to meet Mary Pratt, our Oneida County Legislator, who was there showing her support for this project as well.
Congratulations to Sarah Robinson, Amanda Kane, Angela Martin, Ellen Campion, Catherine Gates, Alex Gates, Steven Gates, Eric Bugbee and Dan Mosny for receiving a Staff Shout-Out! Thank you for all your hard work in putting together an amazing experience for our students.
We’re pleased to recognize the five members of the Mount Markham Speech & Debate Team who competed in the NYS Forensics League Championship Tournament at the Bronx High School of Science. The team is coached by Suzanne Culver and Alaina Brower throughout the year to prepare for virtual, pre-recorded, and in-person competitions that develop their speaking and acting skills. These five team members qualified to compete at the NY State Championship Tournament. Representing Mount Markham this year are freshman Kihana Eccleston, juniors Nick Thomas and Skylar McConnell, and seniors Hayley Lee and Lana Mahar. A shout-out to Nick for finishing 1 point out of the semi-final round in an unbreakable 3-way tie for 11th place.
As part of the trip to the state championship tournament, the team also visited the American Museum of Natural History and Central Park in Manhattan.
This same group will represent Mount Markham and the Albany Diocese at the National Catholic Forensic League’s Grand National Tournament in Chicago over Memorial Day Weekend. We wish them the best of luck!
Students involved in Drama Club, Speech & Debate, Band, Chorus and the musical attended a performance of the musical “Come From Away" at the Stanley Theatre recently. Based on the real events following the September 11th attacks, the musical takes a glimpse into the lives of the people of Gander in Newfoundland, Canada accommodating 7,000 passengers stranded when US airspace was shut down.
Thank you to Arts In Education for their support in bringing theater to our students.
Students in Ms. Robinson's Astronomy class have been working on coding drones to simulate missions from the Ingenuity helicopter on Mars. Students created two different missions, one easy and one more difficult, that students in Mrs. Stone's fourth-grade class had to code with the help of some of our friends in the Astronomy class! Students had a great time coding the missions, learning a little bit about Mars, and were super excited to see the drones take off and do some cool tricks (including some flips, which Ingenuity didn't do)! Thank you to Mrs. Bock for her help with this project and Mrs. Blackwell for helping us bring this to some of our elementary students!
Congratulations to Joe D'Apice and Victor Zampetti for receiving a Staff Shout-Out! Thank you for continuously supporting new and exciting opportunities for our students.
