Five Mount Markham High School students' works of art were selected for participation in the Reflections 2024 Youth Art Month Exhibition at the Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts in Little Falls. Their work is part of an annual show that includes other Herkimer County districts and will be on display until February 23. Students Lana Mahar, Alexandra Marsala, Andrew Ray, Kacie Owen, and Cecilia Kennedy all showcased their work in this show.
Congratulations to our Mount Markham High School Character Trait Award winners for January! The following students were honored for displaying the trait of "commitment" throughout January: Brandon Knisely, Eli Pasquale, Faith McGurk, Kayla Reichert, Zane Abanatha, Kacie Owens, Reganne Jones, Trevor Sweeting (absent from picture), Trissa Palmer, Danielle Williams and Jenna Kocienda.
Ms. Robinson's Astronomy class created Martian or Lunar colony dioramas with the added challenge of using paper circuits to make features light up. Mrs. Yager and Mrs. Bock supported the paper circuits portion, which the students really appreciated. All of the projects lit up, and students learned a lot!
Congratulations to Ann Bouthillier for receiving a Staff Shout-Out! Thank you for going above and beyond to support our students.
Jack Baylis served as the Agriculture teacher and FFA advisor at Mount Markham High School for many years, retiring in 1995. Sadly, Mr. Baylis passed away in January of 2023. As a tribute to his time at Mount Markham, Mr. Baylis’s tools and equipment were donated to Mount Markham FFA by Mrs. Judy Baylis, Jack’s wife.
On Wednesday, January 31, Mrs. Baylis came into the high school classroom to meet with students. Students Zach Congden, Eli Assisi, Ryan Treen and Owen Allen showed Mrs. Baylis the progress made in organizing and installing equipment in the shop.
Mike Brown, a former student of Jack’s, helped facilitate getting the equipment to the high school. Mike has been a strong supporter of Mount Markham FFA since the chapter rechartered in 2017.
Ms. Robinson's Earth Science classes have been learning about rocks and minerals. To understand how the arrangement of atoms leads to mineral properties, students arranged "atoms" (marshmallows) in common mineral structures (cubic, hexagonal, tetrahedron). This year, we had a record of holding 47 textbooks!
Congratulations to Dominic Jones for receiving Player of the Week for 01/15 - 01/19! Keep up the great work.
Last month, members of the French Club (Advisor, Mrs. Bouthillier) and Art Club (Advisor, Mrs. Pagano) attended Monet: The Immersive Experience in Schenectady. Students were able to experience Monet’s work through a virtual reality experience, recreations of his atelier and garden, by recreating his work themselves and the 360-degree immersive experience. This field trip was generously sponsored by the Arts in Education grant.
Congratulations to December's Character Trait (Generosity) award winners: Camryn Donley, Kyle Youngs, Kyli-Ann Laymon, Virginia Culver, Dameon Case, Ben Dziuban, Chris Hendrickson, Keira Mowers, Gavin Washburn, Isaiah Boyko. Emma Johnson and Chloe Risley!
Ms. Robinson's Astronomy class has been very busy in their planet unit! After learning about Mars and watching The Martian, students completed a Breakout Ms. Robinson created where they had to solve puzzles similar to those solved in The Martian to break out! Next up, they had to build rovers using Lego Robotics. They then learned about coding and had to program their rovers to "travel on Mars." Thanks to Mrs. Blackwell, Mrs. Yager, and Mrs. Bock for their help with these projects!
On Saturday, the Senior Class sponsored the annual Semi-Formal Winter Ball. Seniors chose "Hollywood" for the theme and we had a great "Walk of Fame" in the hallway with red carpets, Hollywood stars for students in attendance (with stars also for the faculty/staff who helped out), and paparazzi! Ms. Robinson and Mrs. Brower would like to thank Mrs. Kenyon, Mrs. Fallon, Senora Jeter, Ms. Reynolds, Mrs. Trevisani, Mrs. Raymond, Mr. Keida, Mrs. Hoke, Officer Kirkpatrick, Officer Pedulla, Mr. Hoke, and Mr. Zampetti for helping out at the event as well as Ms. Nelson and Student Council for some behind the scenes assistance!
On Thursday, Ms. Robinson's Astronomy class and Mrs. Martin's Environmental Science class went to Colgate University to see a show in the Visualization Lab! Students learned about the upcoming solar eclipse, what stars and planets are currently in the nighttime sky, and how life on Earth is related to the birth of the Solar System. Students also toured both the Geology Museum and the greenhouses at Colgate!
