The Mount Markham Board of Education recently passed a resolution to honor Charles R. Engle - soccer coach, teacher, and mentor - by erecting a memorial monument sign at Mount Markham High School.
Coach Engle was a coach for 48 years (49 seasons), starting at Leonardsville Central School in 1968 until his retirement in 2016. During that time, Coach Engle amassed 650 wins (an NYS record), made it to the state final on four occasions, won 13 Class C Sectional Titles, and had three undefeated seasons in league play. His record of 654-233-4 is among the top 10 in the nation (according to the NYS Public High School Athletic Association).
He has been recognized as a New York State and National Coach of the Year. Engle was inducted into the NYS Public High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame in 2010 and the Greater Utica Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. He is the recipient of the Mount Markham Distinguished Service Award.
